COOLANGATTA, Queensland/AUS (Monday, March 12, 2018) – The Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Gold Coast, Stop No. 1 of the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT), has been called ON for today. Competition will recommence at 7:05 a.m. local time with women’s Round 2. Men’s Round 2 and women’s Round 3 are on standby. The pristine point-break at Snapper Rocks will offer clean three foot (1 metre) waves running down the sandbank for the elimination rounds today.

“We are seeing clean conditions out at Snapper this morning, so we are going to get started right away,” said Jessi Miley-Dyer, WSL Deputy Commissioner. “We are on for a 7:05 a.m. local time start with women’s elimination Round 2. We will put men’s Round 2 and women’s Round 3 on standby for a possible start today. Our plan is to monitor the conditions throughout women’s Round 2, and if they hold up, move through those next two rounds.”

Six-time WSL Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) has unexpectedly found herself in the elimination Round 2 where she will come up against Trials winner Bianca Buitendag (ZAF) in Heat 3. The Coolangatta local will be fighting to stay in the draw as she hunts for her seventh Roxy Pro Gold Coast title.

Paige Hareb (NZL) will have the tough task of taking on 2017 Roxy Pro Gold Coast runner-up Lakey Peterson (USA) in Heat 4 of Round 2 in what is sure to be a hotly contested match-up.

Current World No. 1 John John Florence (HAW) is now in the dreaded elimination Round 2 where he will face off with wildcard Mikey Wright (AUS) in the first heat of men’s Round 2.

2014 Quiksilver Pro event winner and 2014 WSL World Champion Gabriel Medina (BRA) will take on Trials winner Leonardo Fioravanti (ITA) in the second heat of Round 2.

SE tradeswell eases Monday with lighter wind expected. Mid periodmid size E swell from former Cyclone Hola will likely build in through Tuesday, with light wind possible in the morning. A separate low may set up larger ENE to E swell around Wed-Thu, although we’re lower confidence on the details at this point. Surfline
