11-time World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) will open the competition, surfing the first wave of the day at 7:38 a.m. PDT. Although he is the visionary behind this incredible wave, Slater has yet to win an event here at the Surf Ranch. He is hoping this is the year for his World Title and Olympic hopes, but will first have to overcome current World No. 3 Jack Robinson (AUS), Jordy Smith (RSA), and Leonardo Fioravanti (ITA).

Defending event winner Filipe Toledo (BRA) and current World No. 1 Joao Chianca (BRA) will take the stage in Heats 2 and 3, respectively.

The first heat of the women’s Qualifying Round will be one to watch as defending event winner Johanne Defay (FRA), five-time World Champion Carissa Moore (HAW), Rookie phenom Caitlin Simmers (USA), and rising talent Bettylou Sakura Johnson (HAW) battle for a place in Finals Day.

Reigning World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) will make her debut in Heat 2 of the women’s Qualifying Round alongside CT veterans Tatiana Weston-Webb (BRA), two-time World Champion Tyler Wright (AUS), and event wildcard Alyssa Spencer (USA).

LEMOORE, Calif., USA (Friday, May 26, 2023) –  The Surf Ranch Pro Presented by 805 Beer, Stop No. 6 on the World Surf League (WSL) 2023 Championship Tour (CT), starts tomorrow at the world-renowned, human-made wave in Lemoore, Calif. The world’s best surfers are ready to put on a show like no other for a live audience of surf fans. They will be leaving everything out in the water as this is the first event following the Mid-season Cut, and one of five opportunities to gain points in order to clinch a spot in the WSL Final 5 and qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games. The Surf Ranch Pro features an exciting new format this year, and for the first time ever, surfers will compete at night under the lights. The Surf Ranch Pro will run on Saturday, May 27 and Sunday, May 28, 2023.

11X World Champion Kelly Slater To Surf First Heat of the Day

The first heat of the day will feature none other than 11X World Champion and Surf Ranch visionary, Kelly Slater (USA). Slater will be up against current World No. 3 Jack Robinson (AUS), who is returning to competition after withdrawing from the Margaret River Pro due to an injury. Jordy Smith (RSA) and Leonardo Fioravanti (ITA) will join them in the opening heat of the morning.

“I might put on a Filipe (Toledo) or Gabriel (Medina) costume this year (laughs),” said Slater. “Only two guys have won this thing in the men’s division, let’s be real. Their skill level is outrageous. There’s a part of me that’s glad I haven’t won here. There’s that challenge to try to step up my level. I’ve been working out my boards and I’ll get to the rest of it this week.”

Current World No. 2s Carissa Moore and Filipe Toledo Eager for Another Win at Surf Ranch

Past event winners Carissa Moore (USA) and Filipe Toledo (BRA) are both currently second on the rankings and will be eager to have another big result here to overcome Tyler Wright (AUS) and Joao Chianca (BRA), respectively, and move up to World No. 1. Moore will surf in the first heat of the women’s Qualifying Round against defending event winner Johanne Defay (FRA), alongside rising stars Caitlin Simmers (USA) and Bettylou Sakura Johnson (HAW).

“It’s not easy, it’s hard and so much different than the ocean,” said Moore. “You’re in an arena with people at every edge of the pool and a perfect wave that comes every four minutes. It’s in your hands if you mess up or don’t. I’ve been trying to keep it fun and keep it light, and hopefully that will work in the contest.”

Toledo will make his event debut in Heat 2 of the men’s Qualifying Round. He has never missed a Final at this event and will be looking to maintain that record.

“It’s a perfect wave, there’s everything you dream of, barrels, air sections, everything,” said Toledo. “You just really have to try to figure out the timing and try to bring variety to a new line. I always say, every wave here is a perfect 10, you just have to perform and surf your best and there’s a lot of pressure. It takes me out of my comfort zone of the ocean.”

California’s Top Surfers Hope for Win at Home

After traveling all over the world, top surfers from California are looking forward to competing in front of their home crowd. Santa Barbara’s Lakey Peterson (USA) won this event in 2019 and is looking for another big win this weekend to move her up the rankings. Caroline Marks (USA) has proven she’s a World Title contender with solid performances but is still seeking her first event win in 2023. Rookie phenom Caitlin Simmers (USA) has already earned one CT event win this season in Portugal and is now hoping to win another in her home state.

“This event almost feels more like a skate or snowboard competition,” said Simmers. “You have a plan, but if something goes wrong you have to alter your plan. You have to be strategic and try to do different since it’s the same perfect wave every time.”

San Clemente will have strong representation with current World No. 4 Griffin Colapinto (USA), event wildcard Cole Houshmand (USA), and injury replacement Jett Schilling (USA). Encinitas’s Alyssa Spencer (USA) has also earned an event wildcard as the second-highest-ranked surfer from North America on the Challenger Series. All have been dominating the Challenger Series and could cause big upsets here at the Surf Ranch.
