TAVARUA/NAMOTU, Fiji (Friday, June 9, 2017) – A lay day has been called at Stop No. 5 on the 2017 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT), the Outerknown Fiji Pro, due to small surf on offer today.

“The swell we were looking at for today never materialized the way we had hoped,” said WSL Deputy Commissioner, Renato Hickel. “The waves are only three-to-four foot out at Cloudbreak now, so we are calling the event off for the day. We are going to provide updates later on what we are looking at in the long-range forecast. There is a really good swell shaping up for late Sunday, early Monday and Tuesday of next week. There is a good chance that we will run the last two days of the event those days. Stay tuned for the next call.”

Event officials will reconvene tomorrow morning at 7:00 a.m. local time to reassess the conditions and make the next call.

When competition gets back underway, elimination Round 3 will continue with big match-ups.

Round 3 Heat 8 will see 11-time WSL Champion Kelly Slater (USA) match-up against rookie Connor O’Leary (AUS). Slater will battle to continue his hunt for an historic fifth event title.

After his first CT win of the season, all eyes will be on 2017 CT Rookie Leonardo Fioravanti (ITA) as he takes on reigning WSL Champion John John Florence (HAW) in Heat 6 of Round 3. Fioravanti has the opportunity to send Florence home with a second consecutive 13th place finish when they go head-to-head.

Sebastian Zietz (HAW) will see Wiggolly Dantas (BRA) in his Round 3 match-up for a chance to continue through to non-elimination Round 4.

2015 WSL Champion Adriano de Souza (BRA) will work to claim the Jeep Leader Jersey for the first time this season with a strong finish in Fiji, but will first need to eliminate Stuart Kennedy (AUS) in his Round 3 heat.

Up first will be three-time WSL Champion Mick Fanning (AUS) against Michel Bourez (PYF) in Round 3 Heat 5 when the event is called back on.

Lully, long period SW swell will fill in further through Friday before slowly easing Saturday. Wind looks light both days. Sunday will see fading surf with building S wind. Confidence is slowly increasing that we’ll see larger SW swells for Tuesday and Thursday next week and, at this point, wind looks favorable. Surfline.
