10 – 11 January 2014

Dramatic action and unique camaraderie theme of the event

Surf News Network, 11 January, 2015. The surfing was mind blowing at the World’s premier Surfing amphitheater, but the stars of the show were without doubt Pipeline and Backdoor, the waves that put on a flawless spectacle for what was touted as the best day of the winter so far.

There were so many stand out performances today that it is impossible to highlight them all, but with 3 perfect 10s and so many rides in the excellent range, it was a day of surfing to remember. What better way to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Duke Kahanamoku Invitational…..

Jamie O’Brien once again demonstrated his mastery of both Pipeline and Backdoor

Jamie O’Brien ended up at the top of the leaderboard after the first 2 rounds of action today with an impressive 28.57 out of a possible 30 based on his best 3 waves out of the 2 rounds of competition. This included one of the 3 perfect 10s of the day, a 9.57 and an 8.77, as Jamie once again asserted himself as one of Pipeline’s favorite sons.

With a lead of just 0.5 points, Jamie will be looking to consolidate on his position in Round 3, as it seems sure he will advance through to the Round of 16 for the final two showdowns of this Da Hui Shootout format.

Bruce Irons produces a performance to remember on this first day of action

Bruce Irons paddled out at Pipeline today looking relaxed and as if he had not skipped a beat, posting some of the highest scores of the day as he climaxed in Round 2 with a perfect 10, threading a perfect and long backdoor barrel.

With a 9.3 and an 8.77 to back up his perfect 10, he is just 0.5 behind Jamie O’Brien, looking certain to advance through to the Round of 16.

Once there, it will be starting from scratch, as Bruce will look to score more perfect barrels and to stake his claim as one of the best barrel riders on the planet.

Mason Ho put on a flawless performance today, continuing the Ho family legacy

Mason Ho set the bar in Round one heat one, with an impressive attack at both Pipeline and Backdoor, truly living up to his family name and legacy out at this world famous wave.
