A powerful southwest swell hits Tahiti creating Teahupo’o perfection. Feel and hear all the action right from the channel. The screaming, all the excitement, and the roaring sound of every wave takes everything to another level. The swell was solid 10FT with bigger heavy sets exploding on the reef. The conditions were pretty overcast from the morning throughout the day with a few windows of opportunity filled with sunlight, overall it was grey skies with very light wind that created some magical and mystical moments during this surf session at Teahupo’o. The local surfers were pushing the limits going for sets waves that looked liked tow in waves. Matahi Drollet was in tune with Teahupo’o surfing each ride with no fear making it look easy. Eimeo Czermak was going beast mode pushing himself over the ledge on all of the heaviest set waves that were coming through. Gilbert Teave was going deeper than everyone pulling into waves nobody wanted. The local boys were dominating during this swell.

Outer island big wave surfers showed up for this swell as well. Like Jacob Turner & Makana Pang from Hawai’i they were both charging really hard too and surfing really well. This was an amazing swell to be apart of and document. The wipeouts were really heavy one surfer got slammed on the reef splitting open his shin, he had to be rushed to the hospital. Then Tom Lowe went on a west wave that he never came out of he ended up hitting the reef getting knocked out and he took three or more waves on the head while he was unconscious. Thank goodness Vetea David was there doing water safety, he spotted Tom floating in the lagoon and quickly rushed in to rescue him. Vetea David and Sage Burke performed CPR on Tom in the lagoon on the back of the sled of a jet ski and they got him back to consciousness. They pretty much saved his life, this moment in time during the swell was really scary as it truly shows how big the risk is on heavy days like this at Teahupo’o.
