Featured Surfers From Round 1: SUPERTUBOS, Peniche/Portugal (Tuesday, October 18, 2016)1. Kelly Slater (USA) : 11-time WSL Champion Kelly Slater (USA), 44, was in sizzling form on the opening day of competition in Peniche and locked in the day’s maneuver, a massive forehand rotation for a 9 point ride to take the lead. The Floridian later found some tube time on a lefthander to back up his main wave with a 6.83 and put Matt Banting (AUS) and Stuart Kennedy (AUS) in a combination situation, and into Round Two.
2. A quarterfinalist in this event last year, lethal wildcard Frederico Morais (PRT), 24, resumed his quest to get the biggest scalps in pro surfing as he took down former World Champion Gabriel Medina (BRA) and Conner Coffin (USA) in a slow opening round matchup. Morais advances straight to Round 3 while his opponents get a second chance by going into Round 2.

3. World No.4 Jordy Smith (ZAF), 28, successfully launched his Peniche campaign with a Round One win over Jeremy Flores (FRA) and Kanoa Igarashi (USA) to advance straight into Round Three. The recent winner of the Hurley Pro at Trestles suffered a shock elimination in the second round in France and will look to find his rhythm back in the hollow peaks of Portugal.

Today’s call: Round 1 Called ON @ 8:05AM
Conditions: Clean three-to-four foot peaks

SUPERTUBOS, Peniche/Portugal (Tuesday, October 18, 2016) – The world’s best surfers have arrived in Peniche, Portugal for the final European stop of the 2016 Samsung Galaxy WSL Championship Tour, the Meo Rip Curl Pro Portugal, which holds a competitive window starting tomorrow, October 18, and runs until October 29, 2016.

“It’s really fun out there, we have four foot peaks up and down the beach with little barrels and the guys are ripping so we’re going to get going at 8:05am,” Travis Logie, Deputy Commissioner said. “We’ll monitor conditions throughout the day cause the tide is going to drop and there might be a little dip in swell before the next one fills in, but we have put Round 2 on standby as well and are hoping for a full day of great surfing.”

First to compete will be former event winners Julian Wilson (AUS) (2012) and Kai Otton (AUS) (2013) alongside Nat Young (USA) in the opening heat of Round 1.

SW/WSW swell will fade on Tuesday as new, long period W swell from Hurricane Nicole begins to filter in. W swell offers fun surf for the middle and second half of the week with generally light winds and favorable conditions. An active North Atlantic provides the potential for stronger NW/WNW windswell/swell for the weekend and into the early/middle part of next week but local winds and conditions look unfavorable for Supertubos at this point. Surfline.

The Moche Rip Curl Pro Portugal will run from October 18 – 29, 2016 and be LIVE via webcast on WorldSurfLeague.com and on the WSL mobile app.
