Surfing as an olympic sport is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of. Since, half of a good "heat" is getting lucky with waves, how could you possibly declare one "athlete" better than another... You really think a pro surfer earns the right to walk next to someone like Florence Griffith Joyner? Maybe if surf companies have their way, it will become an olympic sport...

Every single Olympic country in the past 70 years has had a contestable surf break. as long as the venue is in the country it has been considered acceptable looking at past precedent. In the case of China for example the Olympics were held in Beijing, however the Equestrian Events were held 1,200 miles away in Hong Kong and the sailing was held hundreds of miles from Beijing in Qingdao. If this is past precedent then finding a contestable surf break is not a problem. http://www.wannasurf.com/ As for the judging issue, as a competitor in surfing and also former competitor of judged sports in the olympics. Surfing has done an excellent job thus far at maintaining consistency of scoring over all athletes and conditions. To argue that surfers have to be in a wave pool is like arguing that alpine skiers would have to be put in indoor facilities because conditions vary too much to make it fair for the athletes, which is preposterous.

Not all host countries have surfable waves... Even if they did, its hard to keep it fair for all athletes, and hard to find an equal base to score off of.(different conditions) A good answer is a wave pool, but that complicates things for the athletes because they have to get a new quiver made for pool water, and they have to practice on a wave machine. (a whole different strategy) Plus it will cost extra money for the Olympics to build a wave pool
