This reoccurring problem really needs to be addressed. I surf Hammers regularly and it seems to be getting worse each year. When we paddle out and the skis don't leave, we let them know they shouldn't be there and need to go. Some teams do the right thing and tow somewhere else until we're done. But there are always a few who stay, showing blatant disregard for our safety and the law, not to mention the lack of respect and aloha. It's only a matter of time before someone gets hurt or even killed. I was out the day after this post and didn't see a ski the whole session. Lets keep it that way.

(continued from above: Once I get out there and it becomes light enough to see what's really going on, do I turn around, pack up and go home when I see how small it really is? Hell no. Might as well tow and enjoy the day out on the ocean. But yeah, if I see a paddle surfer show up, I move. Just disrespectful and rude not to do so. I would know - I've been buzzed while out on my freakin' longboard. Respect for the paddle in guys at all times. -Paul

Disclaimer: I have the same first name and last initial but am not the original poster. I agree with the post and as a tow-in guy, I am ashamed that you encountered what you did. I am not going to make excuses or defend what happened. If there is anybody paddling nearby, the tow guys need to back off - way off. Part of the problem is that it never seems to get big, or at least big in my book on Oahu. Guys like us invest a large amount of money, time, give up a weekend for tow-in certification class, put up with the occasional stupidity of DBOR when trying to renew our tow-in stickers and maintain our PWCs so it's ready to go at a moment's notice. Then anytime there's a swell with some size forecasted, we all start salivating and calling in sick to work. The reality never seems meets the hype created by Surfline and SNN but by that point, we're usually already launching in the pre-dawn darkness without knowing just how small it really is.
