Two of Hawaii’s Top Young Surfers Play Surf Version of H.O.R.S.E.
Zeke Lau and Keanu Asing, two of Hawaii’s most promising young professional surfers, recently added a new dynamic to the sport of surfing with the game of S.U.R.F. Held amid the rippable peaks of Pool Bars at Turtle Bay Resort, S.U.R.F. borrows its foundation from basketball’s game of H.O.R.S.E. in which each person tries to mimic their opponents maneuver, gaining a letter for every missed effort.
“It was a lot of fun doing the shoot and surfing with Zeke. We’ve been best friends for a while so we weren’t taking it too seriously,” said Asing. “But it was definitely a lot of fun.”
The game, captured and edited into a YouTube video, was a collaborative effort between NOML Creative, a Honolulu-based creative agency, and Turtle Bay Resort that showcased not only a new dynamic to surfing, but the fun waves that the lineups near the resort receive well into Spring and early Summer.
“We wanted to find a fun way to showcase the lineups near Turtle Bay Resort and didn’t want to feel like we had an agenda to push,” says NOML Co Creative Director Jeff Mull. “We tapped Zeke and Keanu, who are undoubtedly some of the most promising and talented young Hawaiian surfers today, to see if they would be interested in playing the game and went from there. It was one of the most fun and mellow shoots I’ve ever been a part of.”
