Lower tide and onshore breeze provides great ramps

The combination of a lower tide and onshore breeze, provided plenty of opportunity for surfers to show off their aerial antics at Willard Beach. Brazil was once again a dominant force and this time it was Krystian Kymerson (BRA), who stole the show. Kymerson’s pair of full-rotation backside airs, earned near perfect 9.63 and 8.10 (out of a possible 10.00) scores, during the No-Losers Round of 24.
Kymerson advanced into the Round of 16 with the highest heat total of the day, a 17.73 (out of a possible 20.00) leaving his opponents Tim Reyes (USA) and Dillon Perillo (USA), needing a combination of scores and another opportunity to surf in the Round of 24.

Inspired by the performances of his fellow competitors, Hawaiian Torrey Meister showed why he is among the world’s finest aerialists, opening with a 9.50 for a huge full-rotation air. With the wind blowing directly into the rights, Meister followed up with an 8.17 air-reverse, leaving his opponents Matt Banting (AUS) and Frederico Morais (PRT) needing a combination of scores to beat him.
“I’ve been watching Filipe (Toledo) a lot, he’s really inspiring me with the way he does full-rotation airs on even the smallest of waves,” Meister said. “Ballito is the perfect wave, it’s either glassy and barreling or onshore with the best ramp sections and with the no loser round, you have to go big and put on a show.”
Filipe Toledo (BRA) continued his sensational form that saw him post the event's first and only Perfect 10-point ride on Tuesday. Toledo unleashed his aerial arsenal to hold off his fellow countryman Tomas Hermes (BRA) and Heitor Alves (BRA) with a pair of 7.17 and 8.17 above-the-lip lofts. Toledo advanced into the Round of 16 ahead of Hermes and Alves who will surf again in the Round of 24. “I’m pretty stoked to make it through this round ‘cos it’s a really important round,” Toledo said. “It’s hard to compete against Brazilians because the conditions are so similar to back home and, although we’re friends on land, that changes in the water.”

Davey Cathels (AUS) was the fourth surfer to advance into the Round of 16 after taking down WCT campaigner Tiago Pires (PRT) and early event standout, former ASP World Junior Champion Caio Ibelli (BRA) who will surf again in the Round of 24. Former 2X ASP World Junior Champion Jack Freestone (AUS) put on a show-stopper during his Round of 48 heat, finding all the best launch sections to complete a pair of text book 360 aerial rotations, scoring an 8.67 and an 8.43.
Freestone advanced in first ahead of David Do Carmo (BRA), the pair eliminating Ryan Callinan (AUS) and Gony Zubizarreta (ESP) from the event. Also advancing through the final four heats of the Round of 48 were Jonathan Gonzalez (CNY), who jumped from fourth to first in the final seconds, knocking Matt Wilkinson (AUS) down to second while Yadin Nicol (AUS) Mitch Coleborn (AUS) were both eliminated in third and fourth places respectively. Adrian Buchan surfed with precision to place first ahead of Michael Dunphy (USA) in the Round of 48, as did Jeremy Flores (FRA) and Damien Hobgood (USA), who sealed their Round of 24 No-Loser spots.
The Mr Price Pro Ballito will continue tomorrow with the final four heats of the No-Loser Round of 24, followed by the Round of 24. The next call will take place at 7:00.
