Tom Curren steals the show at the J-Bay Open

During its stop in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa, the ASP World Tour unveiled a new contest within the contest called the “Heritage Series.” Pitting former ASP world champions Mark “Occy” Occhilupo and Tom Curren against each other, the ASP chose two of the most popular surfers in the world and let them do their thing on the long walls of J-Bay.

Curren, who recently turned 50 years young, absolutely stole the show. Looking spry and fit, the Santa Barbara, California, native dropped a perfect 10-point ride in his matchup against Occy—and had many claiming it as the best wave of the entire event.

Putting an exclamation on the ride, Curren “claimed” it by raising his hands as he exited the barrel—something you never see the understated “king of cool” do.
