Over 1300 athletes to compete in the Dukes Oceanfest ......
The Dukes OceanFest will kick off today in Waikiki in honor of the legacy of Duke Kahanamoku. The 9 day fun filled festival takes an army of personal to organize. The event was started 12 years ago and to this day is a great event that indeed remembers Duke Kahanamoku. It was many years ago that the first such honor was bestowed on the "Father of Modern Day Surfing".
The first ever event was "The Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Surfing Championship, December 15, 1965.
The same year a team was formed, the first of it's kind. It was the idea of promoter and manager Kimo McVay. McVay was a character and a great promoter and owner of the "Duke Kahanamoku Nightclub". McVay and Duke were longtime friends. McVay was the first one to stage cockroach races as if they were horse races. McVay later earned a "Lifetime Achievement Award" (1999) for his contributions in the recording arts. The contest he formed in honor of the "Duke" was a great success. It was televised by CBS and earned an Emmy nomination.
Legend surfer Fred Hemmings helped with the event and help pick the invitees. Hemmings was on the first ever "surf team" which consisted of Fred Hemmings, Paul Strauch, Jr., Joey Cabell, and Butch Van Artsdalen. Hemmings had very descriptive names for the 24 men that were selected for the first ever event.
Robert "Endless Summer" August , Mickey "lets party" Munoz, Greg "Da Bull" Noll, John "I am the greatest" Peck,
Filipe "Wild Bull of Punta Roca" Pomar, Paul "the gentleman surfer" Strauch, Butch "Mr. Pipeline" Van Artsdalen, Dewey "the little man on wheels" Weber, Joey "speed surfer" Cabell , Corky "California " Carroll, Rich "Quiet but effective" Chew, Perter "I hate contests except ones I am in" Cole, Mickey "Da Cat" Dora, George Downing, Mike "the man" Doyle, Jackie "young gun" Eberie, Rusty "all star" Miller, Skip 'smooth" Frye, Fred Hemmings, Kimo"easy rider" HJollinger, Mike "slick" Hynson, Kealoha "Aloha" Kalo. The trophy was designed like the Oscar in the statue of Duke. Today it is one of the most coveted of all artifacts.
