Placing passion on a canvas: Jared Prince

Jared moved from Maui to San Diego last year in part to start his business, The Canvas Wave, which sells surf and other action sports photography. Here's his story in his own words..."It's great out here but I definitely miss the islands, everything from the warm water and perfect waves to the little bikinis and ahi poke, but especially my friends and family. ..."

I've always traveled a lot, I love experiencing new cultures and surfing different spots. Each time coming back to Maui was special for me though. It's great walking out of the airport and feeling the trade winds and knowing you're home. Leaving Maui for San Diego was tough, but like traveling, I get to learn a new place now. One of the reasons I started The Canvas Wave was to be reminded of HI and many of the other amazing places I've been.

Actually, It's always been hard to find cool art that captures the surf lifestyle, and it's usually pretty expensive. That's why I decided to start The Canvas Wave, with the goal of providing people art that represented surf and action sports culture at prices they can afford. Photography and canvas seemed like the perfect fit, they are economical and look great. Instead of traditional glass framing, we are gallery wrapping the print around the frame to give it a contemporary look. I was able to get photographers from Hawaii and around the world to provide galleries of their best shots, stuff from Surfer, Surfing, Snowboarder, Powder magazines and more.

Every photographer is an avid athlete in the sport they represent on my site. They often traveled long distances and forfeited their turn in perfect waves or powder, to capture the shot. I hope people appreciate the work that goes into these amazing photos, they don't just happen by luck. Their photographs mean something to them, and I'm humbled that they would allow me to represent them. I will always be looking for more photography from Hawaii, and hopefully expand into new mediums too, so if anyone has work that they think would go well on the site I'd love to see it.
