Dump trucks to shut down Waikiki Beach

WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) – Long stretches of the usually majestic Waikiki Beach will be turned into roads for dump trucks and other heavy machines over the next few months while the City makes changes to its plans for replenishing the beach between the Duke Kahanamoku Statue and the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. The major detour for the project comes after officials discovered unexpected issues with the mechanical blower used to transport sand down the beach. Catch Brooks Baehr's story on Video with Hawaii News Now.

Celebrating the Legacy of a Hawaiian Waterman. Today at Kaimana Beach.

On Mel Kinney by Len Barrow:I learned this morning (feb 16) that I just had a friend pass away. His name was Mel Kinney. If there were ever a waterman it was he. Eddie Aikau would call him “The Kid” as he was the only 16 year old charging huge Waimea Bay in the early 70’s.
I met Mel when I was only 14. He must have been 30 or so. He looked like a gnarly Hawaiian guy, and at first I was quite intimidated by him. The older guys at the surf-break Daimond Head Lighthouse in the early days would sometimes bully us young kids around. Out of his good heart, Mel made sure that everything was cool with all and protected us.

2012 Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau closes

Opening Ceremony in December 2011 © Quiksilver / Bielman....

Surf News, 29 February. Winter closed its door on the three-month holding period of the Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau big wave event today. An active season kept elite big wave riders entertained on Oahu’s North Shore but failed to produce the solid day of 20-foot-plus surf at Waimea Bay that ‘The Eddie’ mandates.

The Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau was last held in December of 2009, won by California’s Greg Long. The world’s best big wave riders will have to wait another year. This was the 27th year of the event. “As much as we’d like to see this dedication run every year, the event is committed to meeting the criteria of 20 feet,” said contest director George Downing.

Very rare do we get to see legends of our sport battle it out — especially at the Queen of the coast

So, who do you think took the heat? Tommy won his Titls in 85-86 & 90 and was Slaters biggest influence in his early years.
