Pacific teams hold lead Day 5 of ISA World Masters.

Surf News, 19 July, 2012 :  Just three days until the finals, the action on Day 5 of the Nicaragua ISA World Masters Surfing Championship continued to reduce the number of competitors and further intensified the battle for Team Gold and the perpetual Eduardo Arena Trophy.

Heats started two hours later this morning to allow for optimal tide and winds, in order to equip the world’s best over-35-year-old surfers with ample opportunity to find the waves with the highest scoring potential at Colorado Beach at Hacienda Iguana. Waves remained in the three to four-foot range, with plenty of long, open faces for big turns and the occasional barrel.

His latest endeavor consists of helping Hawaii's national team, for lack of a better term, achieve international success. In June he helped manage the junior squad to ISA gold in Panama, and now he's in Nicaragua with the masters team, where he hopes to keep the momentum going at the ISA World Masters Championships. ESPN Surfing sat down with him to see why the islands have been such a force recently, and true to form, he had something to say.

In April Albee Layer was surprised with a $100,000 check when he won Taylor Steele's Innersection video contest. One of his bios on a sponsor's website reads: "Laird Hamilton considers himself lucky enough to be Albee Layer's neighbor." That's like getting a reference from Chuck Norris. Given his performance in the highly competitive Innersection contest and what he did during some heady paddle sessions at Jaws this winter, the argument could be made that he's the most prolific kid coming out of Hawaii today.
