In April Albee Layer was surprised with a $100,000 check when he won Taylor Steele's Innersection video contest. One of his bios on a sponsor's website reads: "Laird Hamilton considers himself lucky enough to be Albee Layer's neighbor." That's like getting a reference from Chuck Norris. Given his performance in the highly competitive Innersection contest and what he did during some heady paddle sessions at Jaws this winter, the argument could be made that he's the most prolific kid coming out of Hawaii today.

Adriano De Souza edges past Frenchman Joan Duru to take Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay

Surf News, 13 July, 2012 :  Jeffreys Bay -- Brazilian surfer Adriano De Souza has won the ASP 6-Star Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay defeating French surfer Joan Duru in small and difficult conditions in the Final with polished and dynamic surfing.

It was an icy winter day that dawned for the remaining competitors in the Billabong Pro J-Bay today, but with contestable waves running down the point, contest director Luke Egan showed no hesitation in sending the remaining competitors straight out into the water. “We’re going to crown a winner today, weather permitting,” said Egan.

How much is your leash a drag on your surfing?

When it comes to surf equipment, the leash is usually an afterthought. To some it’s a tangled, bothersome kook-cord, to others it’s a lifesaver. Regardless of its pros and cons, the leash is 6 feet of cord trailing behind you, and it’s essentially dead weight. Dead weight produces drag, making the leash the only piece of surf equipment not designed to improve performance on a wave. But just how much does a leash affect your surfing? Rip Curl Gromsearch Goes Off at Kewalo Basin last weekend Saturday 7.7.12

The second stop of the 2012 Rip Curl GromSearch surf series proudly presented by H2O Overdrive went off this past Sunday July 8th. 88 frothing competitors were met by 3-5 foot clean off shore conditions at the South Shore of Oahu's grommet hot spot Kewalo Basin. Groms ranging from 16 years old to as young as 7, battled the consistent and rippable A-frame peak for the coveted GromSearch titles.

In the boys 16 and under division, the most seasoned and mature groms of the pack put on an amazing display of above the lip rotating aerials, as well as powerful arcs that threw mountains of spray with the howling wind. In the tightly competitive final heat, which was decided by a 1-point differential, Elijah Gates who was surfing up a division took home the big win! Coming up just short was Kaoli 'The Fylin' Hawaiian' Kahokuloa, who was going huge all event with Dorian Blanchard and Kai Matsumoto finishing 3rd and 4th respectively.
