The day Pipeline was first surfed with expertese- By Oakley

Date: One Saturday morning in 1963.

Moment: Gerry Lopez surfs the Pipeline for his first time.

Location: Banzai Pipeline, North Shore, Oahu

On a calm morning in 1963, 15-year-old Gerry Lopez took his first tentative steps on what would become a long, winding road. He, along with his friend Tommy, were on a mission to surf Pipeline. Gerry Lopez had never surfed there before, and he was nervous. “It was a spot that, I guess, I was intimidated with at first,” he said.  ”But I got to know it, and eventually became pretty comfortable there.”

Why Surfing and the World Cup are the Same - by Inertia

I had a thought last week. I was going to call that thought a profound insight, or possibly an epiphany, but in fear of being labeled a misguided mystic or possibly a wanker, it is better I say  I had a thought.

There were two things that contributed to my thought last week: first, the East Coast of Tasmania was going off, and I couldn’t go. Second, I scored a goal playing soccer.

Catching up with Freddy P

You’ve gotta respect a man who speaks his mind, and Freddy P. doesn’t stutter. Nope. He’s got a way with words and that smiley charisma that lets him mostly get away with the envelope-pushing phrases that exit his mouth, so we were excited to sit down with him for a minute on the North Shore. Turns out, keeping a bald head shiny requires a solid BIC-ing every two days, happiness is single-ness, and Freddy’s keen on putting the “pro” back in pro surfer.
