EDDIE AIKAU DOCUMENTARY WINS EMMY AWARD

 

ESPN's "30 For 30" documentary series received an Emmy for Best Sports Documentary Series, and standing alongside the tales of Nancy Kerrigan, Bo Jackson, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Dan Marino is Hawaiian lifeguard and big-wave legend Eddie Aikau. The award marks one of a very few Emmy wins in history, for a surf-related film and a remarkable achievement for director Sam George and producer Paul Taublieb.

   

INDUSTRY NEWS - ASP Acquires Vans Triple Crown

The latest move from the ASP  announced this week was the acquisition of the Vans Triple Crown License. The news comes on the heels of some major moves by the ASP that have expanded its umbrella of properties to include theBillabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards, a deal that was just announced last week, as well as the recent acquisition of The Big Wave World Tour. SIMA to recognize Tom Carrol as Waterman of the Year

The Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA) will celebrate 25 years of uniting the surf industry and protecting the environment by honoring surf legend and two-time world champion Tom Carroll as Waterman of the Year.

SIMA will also honor Golden Globe Award Winner and environmental activist Ted Danson as Environmentalist of the Year, and legendary shaper Rusty Preisendorfer with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

   

Greg Long Wins Billabong XXL Ride of the Year

The Ride of the Year award had loomed large for the entirety of the show. Between each presentation, each surfer was depicted in a short film, self-narrating the day and the moment they caught that memorable wave that had brought them to this nomination.

   

Maui passes tobacco-free beaches & parks bill...No Ka Oi

Maui community celebrates new bill on Earth Day

28 April, High school students, community leaders and environmental groups celebrated Earth Day with the passage of a bill banning tobacco use at all Maui County parks, beaches and recreational facilities. 

The movement to create smoke-free beaches began in January when a group of high school students led an island-wide cleanup and collected more than 14,000 cigarette butts in under two hours.  Students worked with Surfrider’s Maui Chapter, the Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Hawaii and Sustainable Coastlines to organize the cleanup and then present their findings to the Mayor and County Council members....

Elia Herman manages the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary for the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) and heads DLNR’s mar...ine protected species program, providing leadership and direction on a range of marine resource management issues. Born and raised in Honolulu, Elia studied humpback whales and bottlenose dolphins locally before gaining national experience on marine conservation issues at National Geographic, as a Legislative Fellow to U.S. Representative Lois Capps, and as manager of the Global Conservation Initiative at Pew Charitable Trusts. Elia earned her bachelor’s degree from Brown University and master’s degree in coastal environmental management from Duke University.
   

Catching up with Bethany Hamilton

You might think you know everything there is to know about surfer Bethany Hamilton, but she’d tell you differently. Her story has commanded headlines ever since she lost her left arm in a 2003 shark attack while surfing in Hawaii. Her subsequent comeback to the world of professional surfing was the basis of the 2011 film Soul Surfer. And her 2013 wedding was blurbed in People magazine. As an inspiration to millions of people worldwide, it’s no surprise that Hamilton has lived much of her life in the spotlight.
