The world’s best surfers have arrived in the sleepy, fishing hamlet of Peniche for Stop No. 8 of 10 on the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour, the Rip Curl Pro Portugal, held from October 10 – 21, 2012 at the infamous sand-bottom barrels of Supertubos.
Mick Fanning (AUS), 31, two-time ASP World Champion and current ASP WCT No. 3, was the frontrunner for the bulk of the 2012 season, but fell from first to third on the elite ratings after an uncharacteristic Round 2 exit in France last week.
How Big is it? Some are claiming 50' crest to trough or 30' Hawaii Scale. I'd say its close...somewhere between 25' and 30' on the top sets. Maybe its time to measure is 'increments of fear'...Wow, Good job to all the chargers on this historic early swell. These are good days to be a surfer. gq.

The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing hydrated by vitaminwater celebrates its 30th anniversary this year with $1Million in prize money. With 11-time world champion Kelly Slater (Florida) signed on for the 3-event series, he's up against defending champion John John Florence (Hawaii). Slater last won the title in 1998. Now add Sunny Garcia to the mix and it's game on! This year, there will be a one-time $100,000 winner-takes-all cash bonus for the Triple Crown champion. The largest global broadcast of professional surfing in history will take the Vans Triple Crown into more than 200 million homes worldwide.
Day 2 of the Oakley World Pro Junior Championship in Bali, Indonesia, took place in the waves of Canggu. With head high to a little overhead waves, and near perfect conditions, these up and comers, made the most of their time in the water, and showed the world why they are forces in the surf world. Surf News - - The world’s best surfers are currently in transit from the South of France to the sand-bottom barrels of Peniche for the upcoming Rip Curl Pro Portugal presented by Moche to be held at Supertubos from October 10 – 21, 2012. Stop No. 8 of 10 on the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour (WCT), the Rip Curl Pro Portugal will culminate the Dream Tour’s European leg and play a vital role in the determination of the 2012 ASP World Champion.
Defending Oakley World Pro Junior Champion Leila Hurst of Hawaii began her campaign for this years title well by easily winning her opening round heat to advance to round three. Hurst defeated Joanne Defay of France and fellow Hawaiian Mahina Maeda.
Day 2 of the 2012 Oakley ASP World Junior Championships Bali saw the ladies hit the water for their opening round of competition today. Three foot (1.5 meter) right handers peeled down the reef at Echo Beach, Canggu, providing the perfect canvas for the women to battle to be the first ASP Women’s World Junior Champion to be crowned in Indonesia.
