Shark deterrent technology - Facts vs. Fiction

With such heated debate about the conservation of sharks, and the natural desire for safety in our waters, the use of shark deterrent technology has become a necessary conversation that we simply must have. There is much speculation about the offered products, and for those that have that amphibious streak, there are a few pressing questions that are being asked:


Hawaii's Kelia Moniz Wins SWATCH Girls Pro China and the World Title - ASP Women's 2012 Longboard Champion‏

Kelia Moniz is the new ASP Women’s Longboard World Champion after winning the SWATCH GIRLS PRO China 2012 hosted by Wanning in 2-3ft (shoulder high) surf. In a repeat of last year’s final, Kelia faced off against Australia’s Chelsea Williams, the defending event champion, and promptly set about a commanding display of smooth, radical longboard surfing, mixing rail-to-rail lines and classic hang-ten moves to leave Chelsea needing a combination of scores (16.05 vs. 9.5).

Kauai's Sebastian Zietz, 24, has posted the first major win of his five-year pro surfing career at the REEF Hawaiian Pro today to qualify for the 2013 elite ASP World Tour. Accounting for talent like John John Florence (HAW), Sunny Garcia (HAW), Julian Wilson (AUS) and Alejo Muniz (BRZ) along the way, Zietz earned $40,000 in prize money and now leads the 30th anniversary Vans Triple Crown of Surfing series ratings. Conditions today were super contestable with long, overhead waves that allowed maximum scoring potential.


Rell Sunn Menehune Contest continues ON today at Makaha

The Rell Sunn Menehune Surf Contest. The purpose of this program is to educate the public, especially children, about sportsmanship and the environment and to combat juvenile delinquency. This contest is held every year on the beaches of Makaha, Oahu. All children 12 years old and under are welcome to participate in the contest. The public is invited to attend free of charge. Hundreds of children statewide visit Makaha each year to attend and participate in the surf contest.

Annual Surfer Poll Awards tonight at Turtle Bay

Just days before the 2012 World Title is determined in Hawaii, the year’s best surf films, performances, and surfers will be awarded at the 2012 SURFER Poll Awards. After the grueling task of culling through dozens of video submissions, the nominees have been narrowed down into just a handful for each category. SURFER Magazine is pleased to announce the video nominees in contention at this year’s event. The winners will be announced live from Turtle Bay and via webcast at this Thursday Dec. 6th....

Igarashi and Weston-Webb Win 2012 Rip Curl GromSearch National Finals and Invitations to Bells.

The highly anticipated Rip Curl GromSearch presented by H2O Overdrive National final went down in the history books with what some were calling, "The best surfing in a GromSearch event ever!" Emerald green 3-5 foot set waves poured into the Upper Trestles, San Clemente lineup, and the groms held nothing back. National titles, cash prizes, and all-expense paid trips were on the line as the nation's top 64 surfers ages 16 and under battled for GromSearch glory!

Flynn Novak is actually stoked Medina is pulling these. "I told you guys last
year -- I hope other people start trying them," Novak said. Here in the video you can see how incredibly high he's getting. Gabriel's landings are also key to his amazing skill.
