Julian Wilson boosting to his first ASP World Championship Tour win in Portugal

FRIDAY OCT. 19 -- Cold sideshore winds and rain greeted the crowd as they made their way onto the beach today at Supertubes after a couple of lay days at the Rip Curl Pro Portugal. The overnight storm hadn't done much damage to the contest structure or the contest sandbanks but the rain had knocked out the Internet and one of the generators caught fire. And the day's biggest drama was still a couple of hours away, including Raoni Monteiro up against Kelly Slater.

A video recap of the epic surf at Peahi last week

October 9th & 10th saw the first real winter swell roll into islands...no...fuck it, it straight marched in, right through the front door, went into the fridge, grabbed the last beer, and slapped your mama!! That swell came a chargin...and so did the big wave guys just frothing to get out there.  Light southerly winds, a clean, building swell, & not the entire winter tour circus in town quite yet.  Shit this is why we live here year round, especially throught the crappy flat summers, but damn, 30' Jaws in October?!!!

Dont miss Bear Woznick at Talk Story this Wednesday night!

In this intimate portrayal of the relationship between surfing and the soul, Bear Woznick, along with cowriter Lou Aronica, shares his deep knowledge of the sport along with his spiritual vision on every page of DEEP IN THE WAVE.

An extremely accomplished waterman, Bear, who calls the sunny shores of Waikiki home, melds his decades of experience in the lineup with his own spiritual quest. Running the gauntlet of experiences a surfer can have, DEEP IN THE WAVE uses surfing as a metaphor to explain Bear’s special relationship with spirituality and God.

From taking you inside the shaping bay to accompanying the author as he describes the wave of his life, Bear’s portrayal of the beauty and power of the ocean is an inspiring one that truly showcases the profound meaning surfing has had on his life. Instead of standing on the shore with our toes dug into the surf, Bear takes us into the lineup—into the impact zone—to watch and wait, and, if need be, to paddle hard to survive....

Corky Carroll's musing on Tom Curren

Tom curren, one of the most respected and beloved surfers of his generation, has also turned in to a well rounded and talnted musician

Surf News, 15 October, 2012 - Through all these years surfing I have developed certain favorite surfers that I have grown to respect and admire – for their surfing ability or just because I liked them or what they had to offer in the way of a contribution to the lifestyle. Some for all those reasons. When I was younger I had my surf idols, such as Mickey Munoz, Mike Doyle and Phil Edwards. When I was at the top of my career there were contemporaries I held in high regard such as Gerry Lopez, Billy Hamilton and Jock Sutherland. Then, when that period was over, there were always young guys who came along that I thought had something special going on. Shaun Tomson, Mark Richards and Peter Townend are good examples.

Zeke Lau snags 2nd place in the Oakley World Junior Championships, and misses 1st by .07 points

Tuesday October 16, 2012. Oakley ASP World Junior Championships

Hawaii's Ezekiel Lau placed 2nd in the Oakley World Pro Junior Championships at Keramas in Bali today. The powerful Sunset Beach surfer was a standout all event but went down in the final to Australian Jack Freestone. The final scores were Freestone - 13.83 to Lau's - 13.77, missing 1st place by a mere .07 points!!  A tough loss?  Or an outstanding run that highlights Zeke's talent and emerging dominance?  Zeke no doubt put on a stellar performance, and ended up with a sensational result.  All good things happening for the 18 year old Hawaiian who has two more years in this Pro Junior division but may well chase the ASP World Qualifying open Series given his great form and potential.
