Sally Fitzgibbons wins the Fiji Women's Pro

An epic Finals day at the Fiji Women's Pro, Stop No. 5 on the 2014 Samsung Galaxy ASP Women’s World Championship Tour (WCT), saw Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) reign supreme and claim victory after a day of pumping surf at Cloudbreak. She went head-to-head with five-time ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) in their first match-up of the 2014 WCT season.

Fitzgibbons claimed her second WCT victory of the year after winning the Fiji Women’s Pro today. She will retain her ASP World No. 2 position after taking the win over Gilmore. The pair wasted little time in getting to their feet in the Final, catching small scores to kick off the heat.

With the season split into two parts to take advantage of the Southern Hemisphere and Northern Hemisphere swell systems, the ASP BWWT Top 12 surfers will be joined by six international wildcards per event as well as six local wildcards to comprise the 24-man field. The 2014/2015 ASP BWWT Top 12 have been determined based off the previous season’s rankings.

Stand up paddling an Olympic sport?

When Laird’s publicist called us up and asked if we’d like to talk to Laird about his new StandUp Paddle line (he just left Australia after a week of promotion) we couldn’t help ourselves. So many questions! So many questions revolving around the word WHY. Why!??!?

But it turns out there’s rhyme to his reason, and Laird’s got bigger and better plans then we foresaw. This is how we got there.

The women's pro tour returns to Fiji, May 25th

In 2006, Jessi Miley-Dyer was a rookie on the Women's World Championship Tour (WCT). She'd fought her way up the rankings and eventually got her big break: a Cloudbreak.

Miley-Dyer's first year in Fiji was the women's Tour's last. A military coup and, later on, a lack of sponsorship dollars, made the island paradise an impossibility for continued competition and left the men and women of professional surfing wanting of the pristine barrels of Cloudbreak and Restaurants.

Tom Pohaku Stone featured on new BBC series

Whatever your opinions of his policy, it’s pretty cool to have a Hawaiian-raised occasional surfer posting up in the Oval Office as President of the United States, throwing the ever-so-often shaka for good measure. And it’s even cooler when big-time institutions outside of the traditional surf-heavy stretches of the ol’ red, white, and blue recognize surf as not only a sun-tanned sport and vacation activity, but a true subsection of the nation’s cultural totem pole.
