Congrads to Hawaii's Hard Charger: Jamie Sterling for winning the hard core Nelscott Big Wave event.

Photo: Hallman: Jamie Sterling sets his line en route to a win at Nelscott Reef off the Oregon coast.

While much of the attention of the surfing world was focused on the North Shore for the Volcom Pipe Pro, more than 2,000 miles away off the coast of Oregon the Nelscott Reef Big Wave Classic was quietly coming to life. One of five events on schedule for the Big Wave World Tour (BWWT), the last time the Nelscott Reef event, which is now a paddle-only comp, ran was in 2010. Amid solid 20-foot sets breaking nearly a half-mile out to sea, Hawaiian Jamie Sterling edged out the likes of Greg Long, Gabrial Villaran, Aaron Ungerleider, Jao De Macedo, and Ben Wilkinson in the Final to take the win.

Portuguese scientists set McNamara's wave at 111.5 feet

Scientists from a Portuguese university say that the 2013 Nazaré wave by Garrett McNamara has reached 111.5 feet (34 meters).

The first analysis of the wave ridden by Garrett McNamara was made by researchers at the Faculty of Human Kinetics of the Technical University of Lisbon.

The initial measurement is believed to set the wave at 34 meters (111.5 feet), which would definitely improve the record set in November 2011.

FLORENCE WINS THIRD CONSECUTIVE TITLE AT VOLCOM PIPE PRO

John John Florence today claimed his third consecutive Volcom Pipe Pro title at the Banzai Pipeline, eliminating Chris Ward (San Clemente, Ca., USA), Josh Kerr (AUS), and Olamana Eleogram (Maui) in the final. Perhaps the truest testament to the uncanny surfing talent of this 20-year-old is the reliability with which he can produce world class performances, given all the unpredictability of the ocean and competitive heats. With two mind-blowing days of barrels and an extra $20,000 in his pocket, Florence now departs his modest beachfront home on the shores of Pipeline in pursuit of the 2013 ASP World Title. The Volcom Pipe Pro is a 5-star rated ASP event, but does not count towards the world title rankings.

450pm: John John wins it for the 3rd time! On Friday: Florence delivers performance of the Winter at Volcom Pipe Pro

Surf News, Saturday February 2, 2013 :  Pipeline was an insane barrell-fest. A wonderful amabassador of the sport.  All eyes were on Pipeline's favorite son John John Florence at the Volcom Pipe Pro the entire event. In 2nd place, Chris Ward from California. In 3rd place Josh Kerr originally from Australia. In 4th was Hana's Ola Eleogram. 58k went to the Sion Milosky Foundation. It was an epic contest once again;  a perfect pairing of phenomenal waves and supernatural talent unfolded before a highly charged beach crowd. The full story coming later tonight. Mahalo.

Volcom Pipe Pro Day 2 is ON! + Exciting day 1 recaps

Today marked day five of the 2013 Volcom Pipe Pro waiting period and after four straight "lei days," mother nature finally cooperated allowing the contest to be called on in temperamental yet fun conditions with waves ranging from head high to more than double-overhead.  There was no shortage of excitement throughout the day's event which started out with the local trials, then the round of 112, into the thrilling VLCQ heat, and finished off halfway through the round of 96.  The day's competition saw epic tube rides, nasty wipeouts and some high scores, including Kawai Lindo's perfect 10 in the VLCQ. Pipeline goes off its head

Why did contest officials decide to not run the 2013 Volcom Pipe Pro yesterday? Because Pipe was kicking ass and taking names! I spoke with Volcom Pipe Pro surfer representative Flynn Novak this morning and he told me a harrowing tale of him getting knocked out while underwater and barely coming to.

Yes, its real. Biggest wave ever by a large margin. Near 100 feet.

Congrads Garrett McNamara...he did it. Officials will have their work cut out figuring out where the trough is. But in my rough estimate, at the moment of peak cresting, this wave is about 100' high. The biggest ever ridden by significant margin. What an honor it must be for Garrett. Interviews and glories galore are on the way. And to top it off Garrett did not get a rush out of it! On his Anderson Cooper interview Tuesday night Garrett said with a smile and chuckle " I havent been able to get the rush ever since that glacier wave in Alaska...no rush, so its probably not 100'. Anderson was incredulous: " You did NOT get a rush riding that wave...are you kidding me? Garrett: " I am not kidding you Anderson, I dont know what is wrong with me...there's definitely something wrong"
