Beginning in 2013, Nike will pull back their support of professional surfing and will shift all of their riders over to Hurley, which Nike purchased in 2002. The news came on the heels of an announcement in September that the footwear giant would no longer sponsor the U.S. Open. Come Jan. 1, all Nike head-to-toe sponsored athletes will officially move over to Hurley, and Nike will limit its surf sponsorships to footwear.
The 28th annual Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau official opening ceremony and blessing will take place tomorrow, November 29, 3pm, at Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Oahu. The ceremony will feature this year’s 28 Invitees, including newly elected riders John John Florence (Hawaii), Ian Walsh (Maui), and Alex Gray (California), as well as former “Eddie” champions Kelly Slater (Florida), Greg Long (California), and Ross Clarke-Jones (Australia). The surfers will be joined by members of the Aikau family, including Eddie’s younger brother and Invitee Clyde Aikau.
After 6 hours of tow surfing, Garrett decided to paddle his 12ft Dick Brewer gun during the biggest swell of the year in Nazare, Portugal. He went for the first wave, missed it, turned around to paddle back out and was faced with one of the biggest waves of the day about to break on his head. He attempted to take his leash off but had no time so he went over the falls along with his gun. The Dick Brewer made it to the beach with GoPro still intact before Garrett came up for a breath. Thanks to his Body Glove Survival Suit and Martin Stepanek's Waterman Survival Course he came up with a big smile on his face and ready for more!
SUNSET BEACH, Oahu/Hawaii – (Tuesday, November 27, 2012) - The Vans World Cup of Surfing – the second jewel of the 30th anniversary Vans Triple Crown of Surfing hydrated by vitaminwater – hit the waves at Sunset Beach today in a new double-overhead swell. At this size, Sunset can be even more challenging than on the giant, life-threatening days, and a 30-minute heat can dissolve faster than salt in water.
Look closely and you'll see its Tom Carroll! And you can hang out with him at Surfer the Bar this Wednesday nite! Go HERE and scroll down. Few can hold claim to what this man has done. Along with thousands who've been around the sport for decades, Tom is one of my personal all time favorite athletes. He has been without question a living surf legend for 3 decades and continues to push his limits to this very day in death defying surf. Do not miss a nite with Tom Carroll.
Take a nite with friends and enjoys singer songer writer Matt Costa at a one of a kind venue this Thursday evening!
When Matt Costa sat down to write what would become Unfamiliar Faces, the follow-up to his 2005 debut full-length Songs We Sing, the singer/songwriter took his most treasured belongings and put them on a shelf — then stared at them and just let the memories flow. “That way I could see everything that I loved,” he explains (the collection included his favorite books, a giant wooden pipe, and a box of old 45-speed records from the late 1950s). “I let my imagination wander. Regular life isn’t as exciting as an imaginary life.”
The VANS World Cup of Surfing pre-dates the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing series, this being the 38th year of the event. In that time, surfers from Australia and Hawaii have claimed 16 titles each at Sunset Beach.
Today's powerful surf with wave face heights of up to 15 feet favored those who have invested the time and relish in the power that this expansive, shifting lineup is feared for: predominately local Hawaii surfers and visiting Australians.
Fin setups are designed to get the most of different types of waves. What is the best fin setup for a small mushy wave? With what set of fins should you paddle out in a big wave surfing day? Sometimes, it's hard to pick the right fin setup for the right wave, but this chart will help.
