John John back in & Tiago Pires out at the Volcom Fiji Pro

The ASP’s 2012 Rookie of the Year had big hopes for the 2013 season. After becoming the first ASP rookie in men’s history to make a world title run last season, it didn’t seem too much of a stretch to believe John John Florence would be in the hunt this year. But in March, a bad landing at the Quiksilver Pro changed all that. Suddenly, the question was whether or not Florence would even be able to surf this year. Fortunately, according to Florence this week, the ankle is not only healed, but it’s feeling “a lot stronger than before the injury.” That should make things interesting at the Volcom Fiji Pro, where he’ll be returning to competition.

It's official... the Big Wave World Tour is now part of the ASP

The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) International announces the acquisition of the global Big Wave World Tour (BWWT), with arrangements for support in 2013 and formal sanctioning commencing in 2014.

'We are very pleased to have finalized the deal between the ASP and the Big Wave World Tour,' Paul Speaker, ASP CEO, said. 'The competitors on the BWWT are some of the fiercest and most-respected watermen on the planet and we are eager about the opportunity to take their tour to the next level. This arrangement also allows the world’s best surfers on the ASP World Championship Tour (WCT) to compete in big-wave events moving forward. 2014 will be an exciting year on all fronts.'

*ASP UPDATE* Mitch Coleburn wins Quiksilver Saquarema Prime

Rippable waves in the 3-5 foot range were on hand at Itauna Beach, Rio de Janeiro as Mitchel Coleborn (AUS), 26, earned his first career ASP victory by defeating Marc Lacomare (FRA), 22, by a score of 17.60 to 15.67 in the Final on Sunday at the Quiksilver Saquarema Prime presented by Coca-Cola in Brazil.

With his result today, Coleborn earned U$ 40,000 in prize money and 6,500 points to catapult him up to number 14 on the ASP World Ranking. At the Sunday, there were still plenty of high scoring waves throughout the day that included some long barrels, big turns and even a 10-point ride of the Lacomare in final heat.

Too many jetskis at Teahupo'o - when is it enough?

With the amount of Jet Skis and testosterone buzzing around Teahupo’o during last week’s swell, you could’ve assembled a navy that would match Uruguay’s in any ocean-born conflict. The photos made it look like war —

Lets go back to the swell of decades...

Some deep carves and high airs all over the south shores for 10 days straight. Not since 1980 have we seen such a run of swell. It's was 6' and up for 8 days straight with plenty reports of 10' sets. There's were 3 storms with the 1st one having 2 pulses. Swell one hit Thursday 5/16 reaching up to near 8' at select spots (honest). This storm 'occluded' or stalled allowing another pump Sunday at about the same size. Then #2 storm cranked it Monday and #3 Wednesday. Thursday the 23rd still had those 6' bombs.

Saturday surfer profile - Catching up with Sunny Garcia

Sunny Garcia will not likely be a politician, military strategist or President of the United States. But every word of our late great presidents quote above leads to emphasize that this Waianae bred surf icon is every bit the warrior- and lives and dies for what his gut tells him. Dubbed "Sunny" for a happy disposition as a keiki, Vincent Sennen Garcia was born January 14, 1970. Now even at age 44 I'd say his mom got it right.

Sebastian Zietz gets a new sponsor - signs with Octagon

Global sports and entertainment marketing leader Octagon has signed one of surfing's top young talents, Sebastian Zietz to a full representation agreement. Widely regarded as one of the most exciting young surfers on the ASP World Tour, "Seabass" captured the 2012 Triple Crown of Surfing championship, 2012 Qualifying Tour championship and was a semifinalist in the 2012 Pipeline Masters.

New "Surf House" web series documents the life of a North Shore surfer

When "Surf House" -- a new reality show about four young surfers on the North Shore of Oahu -- premieres today on Network A Hawaiian starlet Alisha Gonsalves will probably miss it. That is because the South Shore of Oahu has is firing and the 20-year-old wahine will be most likely surfing overhead waves at her home break Ala Moana Bowls. The waves in Town were firing for the past four days. Therefore, it was difficult to nail down Alisha for an interview because she was surfing so much. For the past two years, she has traversed the globe, competing and chasing World Championship Tour qualification. So when she is at home in Honolulu Alisha is looking to surf as much as possible, especially when the waves are this good. Finally we caught up to her after she surfed six- to eight-foot Ala Moana Bowls for three hours plus with less than a dozen guys in the water. Needless to say, she was stoked on the epic session at her home break, and seemed equally excited to talk about "Surf House."

A do not miss event...with one of surfings greatest characters and shapers.

DICK BREWER is to modern surfboard design, what Kelly Slater is to modern day surfing. A contemporary shaping genius who was himself an impressive surfer, Brewer has set the pace in surfboard design for five decades. His designs have affected every generation since the '50s; his boards have been ridden by the sport's best, including Eddie Aikau, Buzzy Trent, Jeff Hakman, Gerry Lopez and Reno Abellira, to Garrett McNamara and Bruce Irons today. The son of an aircraft machinist, his exceptional handcrafting skills and understanding of outlines, contours and edges continues to translate surfboard "blanks" into highly functional - and collectible - pieces of art.
