7. The best wave ever surfed by a girl. In the round three heat between Carissa, Malia and Pauline, Carissa surfed what was quite possibly the best wave ever surfed by a girl. Four huge open-face hooks and carves, tight, in the pocket, with excellent style and spray reaching the commentator’s building. She fell off after her fourth radical turn, as she was setting up for a possible fifth turn, and was still awarded a 9.90. Oh boy, the solitary wave that shifted a perspective.

John John Florence wasn't supposed to bomb out of the Quiksilver Pro Australia in Round 2. He was expected to contend for the top spot on the podium, but in fickle conditions at Snapper Rocks on Queensland's Gold Coast on Monday, Florence was upset by South African journeyman Travis Logie. The surf was infrequent and uncooperative, which led to a slew of failed air attempts and low scores. As we've come to know, Florence is at his best when the waves are pumping, and these were not ideal conditions.

Special engagement: Gerry Lopez and Kai Lenny at Surfer, the Bar's Talk Story Session Wednesday evening!

Gerry Lopez
There are few images as iconic as Gerry calmly slotted on a perfect, eight-foot day at Pipeline. After redefining the art of tube riding on the North Shore of O’ahu, his focus turned to Indonesia, where he pioneered legendary spots like Uluwatu and G-Land. Now based in Oregon, he surfs, writes, shapes, and shreds powder days near his home in Bend.
Kai Lenny
In the Hawaiian language Kai means ocean, and Kai Lenny certainly lives up to his name. Born on Maui to parents who loved to surf and windsurf, Kai has grown up at the beach. Kai loves competition; currently his main competitive sport is SUP and even at his early age, he already holds the title of 3 World Championships....

3 March, 2014 - Coolangatta - The Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast was called ON today for Round 2 in two-to-three foot waves. Everything was on the line as the surfers hit the water for the first elimination round of the 2014 season. There were tricky conditions, with winners advancing into Round 3 and losers sent packing with an equal 25th place finish.

Mick Fanning, reigning three-time ASP World Champion easily dispatched trials winner Matt Banting in a one-sided heat. Fanning found his competitive gear, used his wave priority perfectly, and unloaded multiple trademark in-the-pocket snaps. Banting showed flashes of potential, but was unable to put a complete wave together, finishing the heat with a pair of 4-point-rides to Fanning's 6.17 and 7.50 (out of a possible 10)....
