Surfer Poll Winners & Wipeouts of 2013

The 44th Annual Surfer Poll Awards at the Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore of O’ahu gathered the best surfers, filmmakers, and surf legends under one roof to honor the best films and performances of the year. Each year the SURFER staff pores through all of the full-length films and web shorts produced that year, narrowing down hundreds of great rides and notable moments to just a handful of nominees. And while it’s always a challenge, this year there was one surfer/co-director who dominated the movie categories: John John Florence. Not only was he voted second in the reader poll, he also took home Best Performance for his surfing in Done, Best Short for his film Begin Again and Movie of the Year for Done, both of which he co-directed with Blake Kueny.

Towing in is so 2000's, the New Classics are Rhino Chasers

Tow whips and tow tubing is so much fun it hurts. Maybe it's the funnest thing ever. And you wanna know why?

Because when you take out the extreme risk of putting yourself on a ledge and paddling into a 10-foot tube you get to experience all the sights and sounds of what big-wave surfers have been talking about for years. Can you imagine being in something so round 20 years before it would've put you on the cover of every single surf mag in the world? Oh how the times they be changing!

Stop #3 - The Billabong Pipeline Masters - Dec.8th-20th

The Billabong Pipe Masters is the quintessential event in professional surfing and Pipeline is the Holy Grail of waves by which all others are measured. The third and final jewel in the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, the Pipe Masters is one of the longest running events in professional surfing, even pre-dating the Triple Crown by more than a decade.

Ezekiel Lau wins it!

Hawaii's own Ezekiel Lau, 20, posted the largest victory of his young career today by winning the prestigious 39th annual VANS World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach - the second stop of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing hydrated by vitaminwater®. Lau's win earned him $40,000 and sees him close the year at 35th position on the ASP world rankings. While that doesn't qualify him for next year's elite World Championship Tour, it does guarantee him an excellent seed. He also holds a shared lead on the coveted Vans Triple Crown series rankings with Michel Bourez (Tahiti) heading into the third and final event of the series - the Billabong Pipe Masters, where he is a local wildard entry.
