Anti-whaling activists called on Wednesday for Australia to send a naval vessel to the Southern Ocean after a confrontation in which they said a Japanese whaling ship collided with two of their protest vessels, damaging their flagship.

'The Nisshin Maru has rammed the Steve Irwin and the Bob Barker, but both vessels continue to hold their positions,' Paul Watson, the founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society which runs the protest boats, said in a statement.

Drug Abuse: An Overlooked Blight on the Surfing Community?

The issue of drugs in sport has been talked about time and again, with ongoing cases of high profile drug cheats being uncovered from Carl Lewis to Lance Armstrong.  However, the issue with drugs and surfing is a little more complex than athletes taking performance enhancing drugs to get to the top. Surfing is not just a sport, it’s a lifestyle. The surfing lifestyle has had a perceived image since the 1950’s and 60’s when it first came into the spotlight; the relaxed party scene where the sport and party atmosphere were one and the same. It seems as if the general view of the surfing community was for ‘happy go lucky’ spirits who simply like to follow the surf and have a good time. Recreational drugs have always been an unspoken yet widely accepted part of the culture, which is something which has changed over the last 25 years....

Twenty-eight years along in the life of The Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau big wave invitational, we are reminded that what helps to make The Eddie great are often the times it doesn't run. For all these years Contest Director George Downing has maintained a strict 20-foot minimum wave requirement that has ensured the event only takes place on the most memorable of days at Waimea Bay. 

Highlights form February on the North Shore

Big wave surfer, husband, father, and respected Kauai community member, Rick Proczka, lost his life surfing a perfect but dangerous swell at Hanalei Bay yesterday. There were about 15 of us surfing with him when he died.

The lineup at Hanalei is huge. It takes about a half-hour to paddle around the reef from the beach to get to the takeoff spot, sometimes longer if you get caught inside by a set on the way out. There are strong currents, reef variables, 20 knot trade winds, and river chop to contend with – which when combined with large surf and fading light, makes it impossible for surfers to keep track of each other.

Yesterday evening, shortly before sunset, the tide was very low making the already large surf even more dangerous than usual. The swell was pulsing with big freight-train barrels spinning off for hundreds of yards down the line....
