Soon big-wave surfers and spectators will be able to get more accurate information about incoming swells, with a buoy deployed by the University of Hawaii off the famous Peahi surf spot "Jaws."
In response to public requests, on Dec. 3, the University of Hawaii at Manoa's School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology deployed a high-tech buoy that will collect data about wave heights, directions, swell depths, durations and ocean temperatures, and post the information online every half-hour, said Chris Ostrander, director of the university's Pacific Islands Ocean Observing System. Perrow Wins Billabong Pipe Masters, Florence Takes Vans Triple Crown

BANZAI PIPELINE, Oahu/Hawaii (Saturday, December 10, 2011) – Kieren Perrow (AUS), 34, has won his inaugural ASP World Tour event, taking out the Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons over fellow countrymen Joel Parkinson (AUS), 30, in four-to-six foot waves. John John Florence (HAW), 19, also found his way to the podium as the overall winner of the 2011 Vans Triple Crown.

Perrow, who finished runner-up to Jeremy Flores (FRA), 23, in last year’s Billabong Pipe Masters, returned to form again this year and charged the massive Pipeline conditions on the opening two days of competition to solidify his position on the 2012 ASP World Tour. The Australian was equally deadly in the smaller conditions on the final day and commanded the Final against Parkinson in a backdoor shootout to secure his maiden ASP World Tour victory.

The 8th annual Kona Surf Film Festival celebrates a huge night

10 December, 2011 : - - The 8th Annual Kona Surf Film Festival really went off! I'm still a bit frazzled from the weekend, so I'm pretty sure that it was the busiest and best year we've had. By quite a margin. Yeah. We had a bunch of movies on two screens, visits from Shane Dorian, Rob Machado, Mike Stewart Mark Cunningham, and Mayor Billy Kenoi.

We had music from Leche De Tigre, Kimie Miner, and a surprise jam mashup from members of Pepper and Iration. We had art and breakdancers and beer and food and the overall mellow chaos that is the Kona Surf Film Festival.

The best surf comics in the world

Surf comics are a great way of pumping a surfer's heart. Dream barrels are always possible when you see yourself in a surf comic strip. Fun, color, hilarious gags and unique pieces of surf culture history.

Surf comics are not very common in surf magazines. There are a lot of great strips with loads of famous surfing cathphrases, but they seem to be a little bit repetitive. Drawings are copied and pasted and then only the words change in text balloon and captions.Fortunately, there are very good surf comic authors adding creativity, humour, quality stories and perfectly designed panels and strips. Usually, surfing is in the center of the comics, but you can also beer drinking, surf shop buying and girl impressing stunts.
