Former Vans Triple Crown champion and ASP World No. 13 John John Florence was bundled out of the REEF Hawaiian Pro in his opening heat at Haleiwa today, the victim of atypical Hawaiian winter surf and an interference call that might have ended his plans for a second crown. The REEF Hawaiian Pro is the first of three events of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing hydrated by vitaminwater®, and without a decent finish here it will be an uphill battle for Florence to win the title again.
What began as a week of maxing waves over 20 feet, today dropped to waist/head-high range at Haleiwa. With Surfline.com’s forecast anticipating very small surf to settle in for the next five days, organizers opted to make use of what was on hand.
Contest director Marty Thomas, director of the Vans Triple Crown has pulled off a 1st ever 'one day' extension for The Reef Hawaiian Pro. The new 'downgraded-delayed' 2-4+' NNW wont fill in enough on Saturday to finish a full day of competition. So they'll have to go on Sunday, the 1st day of the holding period for the Vans World Cup at Sunset. The forecast looks excellent for the 2nd Jewel.
Haleiwa is located at the western end of the Seven-Mile Miracle, in the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii.
The search continues for Kirk.
He was reported missing at about 11:20 a.m. Wednesday in an area known as "Alligator Rock" outer reef.
According to the Coast Guard, the surfer, identified as Kirk Passmore of Haleiwa, was last seen wearing black board shorts and no shirt. Passmore is 32 years old and has red hair. His broken surfboard was located onshore.

Eventually Surtech will discontinue Takayama brands
12 November. After a long and mutually beneficial business relationship, Surf Technicians LLC (“Surftech”) and the Takayama Family Trust (“Takayama”) have decided to provide for an orderly and amicable transition out of their relationship.
Surftech and Takayama have agreed that through September 24, 2014, Surftech will continue to sell Takayama designed and trademarked boards variously branded: HAWAIIAN PRO DESIGNS, HPD, Shapes and Designs by Donald Takayama & bird design, through all of Surftechʼs channels of distribution, on a non-exclusive basis, but thereafter Surtech will discontinue those brands.
