Jason Polakow enjoys 30-foot waves at Jaws

El Niño and La Niña have joined forces to deliver less quality waves to the Hawaiian Islands, this winter. The result is fewer large weather systems resulting in fewer large ground swells.

The upside of La Niña is more wind and that means two ideas: windsurfing and Jason Polakow. "I have never seen such a windy December in all the years I have been here. With the La Nina taking a strong hold on the Pacific I was happily surprised when I saw the maps indicating that there was a Jaws size swell in the pipeline", explains Polakow.

Surfer packed up their quiver from all around the world and traveled to Hawaii. It was big time showdown. Polakow hired a boat to put all the equipment and food on board. Also, he set up a wet suit made with a CO2 canister and air bladder built into the back of the suit so that if he got into real trouble, he would spend less time underwater.

Expedition White Shark: Tracking the Beast of the Deep

Expedition White Shark: Tracking the Beast of the Deep
Surf News
, 20 January, 2012 : - - Expedition White Shark is the world's very first app that tracks sharks that have custom satellite tags attached to their dorsal fins. As a shark reaches the surface it is geo-located by satellites. The app also shows attacks that have been attributed to the Great White shark.
The chances of being attacked by a shark are super slim. Still, an app that gives a heads up of recent shark activity at the beaches is helpful, even if it does feed shark-attack paranoia. The app includes photos and videos of sharks and a game.

This day at Teahupoo- Aug 27th 2011 during the Billabong Pro waiting period is what many are calling the biggest and gnarliest Teahupoo ever ridden. Chris Bryan was fortunate enough to be there working for Billabong on a day that will go down in the history of big wave surfing. The French Navy labeled this day a double code red prohibiting and threatening to arrest anyone that entered the water.
Kelly Slater described the day by saying "witnessing this was a draining feeling being terrified for other people's lives all day long, it's life or death. Letting go of that rope one time can change your life and not many people will ever experience that in their life."

Mick Fanning will join the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Kirra Surfriders Club. Hawaii needs Surf Clubs too!

Mick Fanning will join the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Kirra Surfriders Club (KSC), on the 28th January, in the Cultural Centre of the Kirra Hill, in Australia. Mick and his brothers Ed and Sean joined Kirra, in the early 90's, when the Fanning family moved to Coolangatta, from Ballina.

Clubs like the ones in Australia are a huge reason why there are more 'Aussies' in the top ranks than any other nation. If Hawaii wants to have more competitive domination in the next decade, we must step up and set up the same system.

NOAA scores new jet, Pacific forecasting to benefit

Twin-engine Gulfstream flyovers will help North American weather forecasting

SNN Surf News, 17 January, 2012 : - - A highly specialized NOAA jet typically used to study hurricanes will fly over the north Pacific Ocean during the next two months gathering data that will enhance winter storm forecasts for the entire North American continent. From its temporary base at U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point in Honolulu, NOAA’s high-altitude, twin-engine Gulfstream IV-SP aircraft will deploy special sensors to collect information where the jet stream and moisture from the ocean interact and breed potentially powerful winter storms that impact North America several days later.
