Gerard Butler survives 15-foot wave in Mavericks

Gerard Butler, the actor that will play Jay Moriarty in the upcoming surf movie "Of Men and Mavericks", has survived a huge wave while filming at Mavericks.

Butler was rescued from the big surf, after being hit and taken down by a 15-foot wave. The Hollywood star was underwater for several minutes until a jet ski pulled him off the wave breaking zone.

Gerard Butler was taken to the Stanford Medical Center and, fortunately, he was not injured, just a little bit psychologically shocked. The man who is playing the life of Jay Moriarty had started a surf lessons in August and was taken to Mavericks to shoot parts of the surf movie.

Michel Larronde, Jaws tow-in specialist and shaper reports a unique paddle in session at Jaws | Slideshow

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 18 December, 2011 : - - This year winter started slowly on the Hawaiian islands and the Pipe Masters delivered a pretty clean fun swell of 12 to 15' at Jaws. The Maui young guns are setting the pace at Jaws, paddling, and when this swell approached every one knew that it was going to be a good paddling day. Tyler surfed a couple of smaller sessions last year and he was fired up for this one.

The Nathan Fletcher surfing year

This photo is deceiving as it missing the real heaviness of the moment. Death defying. Surf magazines call it the heaviest wave of the year, others pick it as the biggest wipeout of 2011 and a few believe it is one of the most difficult rides ever. Nathan Fletcher is a surfer with more attitude than hype around him.

On the 27th August 2011, it was Code Red day at Teahupoo, in Tahiti. Locals thought almost all waves were unsurfable. The heavy lips and deep rides were definitely a huge risk for the lives of experienced surfers.

Nathan Fletcher, for many the best all-around surfer in the world, felt he had to drop in that huge 20-foot monster and go for it. After bottom turning, he knew he had to speed up in the highway ahead.

Mike Brock exclusive interview with Icon David Nuuhiwa for Surfersvillage

David Nuuhiwa reached a level of fame few surfers can imagine. Whether it was his smooth styling in the waters of Waikiki in the 50's, his mastery of noseriding in the 60s, or his aggressive transition to the new shortboard in the 70's one thing is certain he was always leading the pack and taking the rest of us along for the ride. The 80's and 90's saw the rebirth of longboarding and again out in front was David Nuuhiwa developing new designs in longboards and winning contests showing us how it is done with style and grace. His career and life as a surfer has covered a broad range of development and changes but he has always stayed close to the soul side of surfing and shared this sense of aloha openly.

Dane Reynolds will be greatly missed in the upcoming 2012 ASP World Tour.

Dane Reynolds will be greatly missed in the upcoming 2012 ASP World Tour. There are many very good surfers, but Reynolds has always been different. We were used to his unexpected moves and impossible tricks and barrels. Now, where will we see him riding waves?

Speculation has been following him for the past 12 months. Has he lost the passion for surf competition? Did Dane Reynolds lose the respect for the whole pro surfing scene? Is he tired of the surf industry or is he simply tired of surfing as a daily job?

The answer is not relevant. The thing is, Dane Reynolds gave color and creativity to pro surfing. He inspired younger generations and transmitted good sporting values.
