Surf News, 25 February, 2012 : - - Snapper Rocks, Queensland/Australia - The Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast presented by Land Rover kicked off the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour with some great performances in shifty three-to-four foot (2 meter) surf at Snapper Rocks today. The Top 34 surfers in the world went for broke in the opening non-elimination round, the winners advance directly into Round 3, while 2nd and 3rd are forced to battle it out in Round 2.Check the Live Coverage

Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay Downgrades from ASP World Title to ASP 6-Star for 2012

COOLANGATTA, Queensland/AUS (Friday, February 24, 2012) – The Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay, Event No. 5 of 11 on the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour, has been officially downgraded to an ASP 6-Star event for 2012.

In an official statement today, Billabong said: “The change in event status follows a broader review in which we are seeking to identify cost savings throughout the business. By retaining an event at Jeffreys Bay, it now provides two qualifying events back to back in the South African region. The move to an ASP 6-Star also opens the event up to South Africa’s aspiring pro surfers for the first time in 20 years and ensures continuity of the event for the local businesses in Jeffreys Bay.”

Welcome to the 36th Annual Buffalo’s Surfing Classic.
This year, we  run over two weekends (five days) Feb. 18,19,20 (which includes President’s Day holiday) and Feb. 26, 27 at Makaha Surfing Beach.
Following Classic tradition, we are again introducing a new surfing discipline entitled SUPsquatch. It requires a minimum of five riders on a huge inflated board, competing in heats of four teams. The boards will be supplied by event sponsor, C4 Waterman. Come on down and try one out.


The Quiksilver Pro was ON for Aloha Friday (Saturday for the Gold Coast which is 20hours ahead)

Roxy Pro Gold Coast Round 1 got underway at Snapper Rocks, Men’s round one has begun. Gold Coast is 20 hours ahead.

Carissa Moore (HAW),19, reigning ASP Women's World Champion took her  first steps towards defending her title today at the Roxy Pro Gold Coast by winning here heat and moves to rnd 3.

2012 ASP World Surfing Awards Honors Champions Amidst Rock Extravaganza

GOLD COAST, Queensland/Australia (Friday, February 24, 2012) – The 29th Annual ASP World Surfing Awards went off tonight at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre with the world’s best surfers trading the beachwear for formal attire as the 2011 ASP World Champions were officially crowned.

Kelly Slater (USA), 40, and Carissa Moore (HAW), 19, took top honours for the evening, collecting the ASP World Title and ASP Women’s World Title respectively.

“I have actually been on tour longer than some of my fellow competitors have been alive,” Slater said. “All joking aside, it’s truly humbling to be up here and honoured in front of such an incredible collection of surfers. I want to thank everyone in the room for pushing me to where I am.”

So much for California dreaming. We have been declared by far the most popular state among Americans, while California – California! The Golden State! – ranks dead last, according to a new poll.
