New Face at Save The Waves in 2013

Save The Waves Coalition is excited to announce that it has hired a new Executive Director, Nik Strong-Cvetich, to join the Save The Waves team beginning in February 2013. Nik has extensive experience in leading, designing, developing and growing environmental programs for small non-profits. “We are extremely happy to have Nik on board. His passion for the mission and background with environmental program leadership will help grow the impact of Save The Waves,” says current Executive Director Dean LaTourrette.

Before joining Save The Waves, Nik founded professional training programs in conservation project management, worked as a consultant in ecotourism development in coastal communities worldwide, and built innovative programs focused on water resource issues in the Monterey Bay area. He holds a BA from Lewis and Clark College and an MPA from the Monterey Institute of International Studies, with a focus on conservation and international non-profit management. In 2009, he produced and directed his first documentary film, Build, which was featured in the Santa Cruz and Seattle Film festivals. He has traveled and surfed widely and is fluent in Spanish, French and Italian.

Nik will lead the organization’s innovative and fast-growing World Surfing Reserves initiative, as well as its flagship Endangered Waves work, which tackles threats to surf zones globally, through regional campaigns, documentary film and ”Surfonomics” in places like Chile, Madeira and San Francisco. “I am truly stoked to join the Save The Waves team and grow the organization to take on the pressing issues that affect our waves and coastal resources worldwide,” says Strong-Cvetich.

Current Executive Director LaTourrette will remain actively involved with the organization as a volunteer, rejoining the Board of Directors alongside org founder Will Henry and others.
