Nat Young has taken out the 2013 ASP World Championship Tour Rookie of the Year title.
The blond boy from Santa Cruz is the first Northern California surfer to qualify for the Dream Tour since Adam Replogle, in 1998, and already makes waves with the giants of pro surfing.
"It feels awesome. It was a goal of mine since the start of the year. It’s what I worked all year for and it feels amazing when you achieve a goal you’ve been focused on", says Young.
"All my career so far has been small stepping stones so hopefully I can continue building and next year or the year after put myself up there in the Top 5".
After a sterling amateur career, the lightning-fast goofy-footer claimed the 2009 ASP North America Pro Junior Title before assaulting the qualifying series, collecting standout results in Hawaii, Australia, South Africa and home in America before qualifying for this season’s elite tour.
Nat Young has finished runner-up at Bells Beach and in Supertubos. He was able to edge out his Rookie of the Year competition Filipe Toledo, 18, and Sebastian Zietz, 25, for the remainder of 2013.
