Julian Wilson Wins Coveted ASP Rookie of the Year

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 13 December, 2011 : - - With his performance as the most consistent surfer throughout the entire 2011 ASP World Title Season, Australian prodigy Julian Wilson has officially claimed the coveted ASP Rookie of the Year award. Wilson, who finished 9th overall on the ASP World Title Race, put in several mind-blowing performances over the year, including his first Final appearance at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast as well as a third at the Hurley Pro at Trestles.

Julian was born November 8, 1988 in Sunshine Coast, Australia. The product of a surfing family, he took to the surf as soon as he could walk.

Early Life:

Julian learned how to surf at 3 years old under the tutelage of his parents and older brothers, securing his first sponsor at age 9.

Competitive History:

  • Winner of the Queensland titles at 12 years old.
  • Australian Junior Longboard champion two years later.
  • Winner of several Pro Junior events (including wins at home in Australia as well as abroad in Indonesia, Europe, and New Zealand). Highlight: He scored a perfect 10 at the Pro Junior in Keramas, Bali.
  • ISA World Junior Champion in 2006
  • Winner of O’Neill Mission invitational
  • Winner of "Best Male Performance Award" at the 35th annual Surfer Poll Awards
  • Winner of the 2010 SriLankan Airlines Pro
  • Who Da Guy?:

Julian Wilson is a regular foot Aussie whose combination of progressive surfing and youthful good looks have made him a perfect product for the surfing industry machine. Wilson has backed up his media blitz with some incredible surfing perfomances, being a pencil-in to the Pro Junior finals for years and creator of the "sushi roll." The sushi roll is surfing maneuver somehwere between a backside air-reverse and a Superman (hands on the rail and legs extended away from the surfboard). All sources credit Julian Wilson as the first to complete this difficult and visually stunning move. As most young surfers finish their junior series run, the next step is the World Qualifying Series. Instead, Julian Wilson decided to take a break and work on his surf film (Scratching the Surface).
