Talk Story Series ftg. author John Clark | Hosted by Jodi Wilmott at Surfer, the Bar. Doors open at 6p – Show starts at 8p $5 Donation to charity “John Clark, a Hawaiian surfer, lifeguard, firefighter, and historian, has studied Hawaiian, read Hawaiian sources on surfing, and built up a massive file of these texts for analysis and translation. More recently, he has tapped into the growing online database of Hawaiian-language articles on native history and culture that were published from the 1830s to the 1940s. By searching out practically every known reference to Hawaiian surfing, Clark has produced an amazing study of the sport, one that far surpasses any previous work. ” —Ben Finney, emeritus professor of anthropology, University of Hawai‘i

John R.K. Clark, the author of a new reference book, HAWAIIAN SURFING: TRADITIONS FROM THE PAST, recently held a talk story about the history of surfing and other Hawaiian board sports at a talk story session at Native Books Hawaii. In this video, Clark talks about the six main Hawaiian surf sports: board surfing, body boarding, body surfing, outrigger canoe surfing, sand skimming, and river surfing. July 16, 2011
