Harold Iggy R.I.P., one of the worlds most experienced and innovative surfboard shapers
Harold Iggy R.I.P., died on Big Wednesay, January 4th from an apparent heart attack. In the sixties,he was a team rider and shaper for Dewey Weber in which he shaped and designed the Weber Performer and around 1970 he designed and shaped the Weber "Pig",a board with an outline that would fit in perfect for today's surfing and could be the first no-nose "wide point way behind center"shortboard ever made. After shaping for various companies like Weber,Rich Parr and Mystic surfboards,He started his own in the early 70's in Pearl City called "The Surfboard Shaping Company".
He quickly recruited my brother Bobby as a team rider along with a group of west side shredders like Bird Mahilona,Reynolds Wright and a surfer who a lot of people credit as the real inventor of the layback,Guy Pilago. He also picked up top Hawaii woman pro surfer Lynn Boyer. He was my brother Bobby's mentor stirring him in the path to a successful surfing career and shaping his boards from the early seventies and shaped all of his boards when he became a top world touring pro.He still shaped Bobby's boards up to his passing.Harold always looked toward the future when it came to shaping. The most humble man ever,in the sixties noted as one of the best surfers in Hawaii,Harold was cut like Bruce Lee and at 71 years old,
He was in better shape than anyone his age and was a 4th degree black belt in the traditional style Jiu Jitsu..He also shaped all of my boards ,my brother Gary's boards and all my other friends when we were groms living in Pearl City back in the day.In 2006,He sponsored me when I paddled the Hawaiian chain by shaping me the most awesome open ocean paddleboard.Harold was the man behind Naish Hawaii,Harold was a waterman's shaper,Kai Lenny,Robbie Naish, Guy Pilago, Bird Mahilona,Reynolds Wright, Lynn Boyer ,Sean Monahan "two time Molokai to Oahu paddleboard champion ,these people turned to Harold including my Brother Bobby and my self because we all knew Harold was a genius who could always figure things out when all else failed.Harold was a Man who hated no one, had no enemies and anyone who knew him Loved him.Harold died in no better of a place, testing his latest design in the waters of Lanikai. For my Family he was definitely a haunai uncle and will be sincerely missed by everyone in this world who were honored to know him.
