HALLELUJAH!!! Karsten Thot bridge is finally reopened

After what seemed like an eternity, the Karsten Thot bridge is officially reopened, thus disproving the previous belief that the Department of Transportation hates surfers.  Why would anyone feel this way?...Probably because as soon as North Shore starts turning on, and surfers want to head up country to surf, frothing after this exceptionally lackluster of a summer, the DOT closed 1 of 2 main arteries into the country, creating a traffic headache for those both country and town bound.  It didn't really thin out the crowds, it just made the commute significantly longer.

Better the bridge to be repaired now, before the season really kicks into high gear.  Now we surfers can access the North Shore...safely.  And the repairs finished earlier than anticipated.  What was originally called for 6-8 weeks of closure,  ended up being only 4.  DOT released a statement earlier today:

"While both directions will be reopened at 5 a.m. Friday, the speed limit on the bridge will remain reduced to 15 miles-per-hour while repair work underneath the bridge continues.

Measures to control traffic will remain in place during the construction. The bridges original 22-ton road limit will also be reinstated, which contributed to the original decision to completely close the bridge for several weeks in September.

The DOT required that the weight limit of vehicles on the bridge be reduced to 10-tons during the repairs to the rusted rivets, steel bolts and plates of the bridge. However, because drivers were not complying with that requirement, the DOT completely closed the bridge on Sept. 17."

Although now I guess my boss knows if I am late to work its beause I really WAS surfing and not "stuck in traffic"!
