Catching up with JJF

John John Florence’s title hopes were dashed early in the season, but that hasn’t stopped him from being one of the most celebrated surfers on tour this year, beginning with his performance at Fiji.

John John Florence has been one of the most intriguing additions to the ASP World Tour in decades. In 2012, his first full season competing at the elite level, the 19-year-old Hawaiian came within striking distance of the world title. Not surprisingly, he was expected to be in the hunt this year, but an early season injury at the Quiksilver Pro put an immediate end to those plans.

Rather than rolling over and playing dead, Florence used the latest bout of adversity to reenergize the purpose behind his surfing. The ankle problem was just another fresh reminder of how much he appreciated his life, and the opportunities in front of him.

He returned in June at the Volcom Fiji Pro, and immediately put the fears about his ankle to rest with a series of incredible performances that led to a third place finish there. And while his competitive stats have been mixed since, his surfing sure hasn’t. John John Florence is the ASP’s walking highlight reel. His ginormous alley-oop in Bali and his tube riding feats in Tahiti and Fiji are nothing short of incredible. But he’s also flexing his creative muscle with iTunes releases such as his movie “Done,” as well as his mini-edits that followed, such as “Again,” and his latest, “& Again.”
